RMIT ABC fact check was awarded $1 million by the Skelton prize last night in a ceremony in Zurich.

This award was presented to the best of 150 fact checking units judged by a committee based upon the 10 best facts checked from each unit.

The RMIT ABC fact check unit is a collaboration between the broadcaster and the university and is the only one of its type in the world.

Sushi Das said the fact checking unit was important due to “a tidal wave of misinformation,” and how it was effecting news.

Ms Das said “people say they can no longer tell what is news on their news feed,” and “facts are submerged in the mud of fake news.”

When questioned regarding the use of the funds Das said the fact checking unit would expand into the Asian region in partnership with other fact checking organisations.
